In 1985, "Baby" our beloved mini dachshund, passed away. She had been a faithful member of our family for many years. Needless to say she left an empty spot that could only be filled by another Mini doxy. We were immediately sorry we had chosen not to have her bred. It would have been so wonderful to have had a puppy from her. So we set out to find another "Baby," Thus began a long and tedious search, after many months and hundreds of miles we finally found her, and this time we decided not to make the mistake of having no off spring. But an interesting thing happened, we found that once you have puppies it's not so easy to let them go. First, I needed one, my wife did too and of course our son and daughter had to have there own. Then our friends were so smitten they needed one or two, and then their children and their friends etc. etc. and before we really knew what had happened we had people we didn't even know calling us and asking for one of those adorable little dogs.
From the experiences we had trying to find good responsible breeders we saw that there is a real need for them. Sure it's easy to find a breeder, but to find someone who really cares about their dogs and tries to raise quality animals is not so easy. Thus Elkhorn Kennels was born, we live on Elkhorn Road in Western Washington State .
